The Tchaikovsky Concert Hall jazz concerts usually gather an audience that consists of serious retro-oriented listeners. On the other hand, the star of contemporary English jazz, saxophonist Cortney Pine and his band, always emphasized the "freshness" of their jazz. Cortney Pine is a leading jazzman in his country (like Igor Butman in Russia or Winton Marsalis in the US). He hosts radio and television jazz programs, performs with the most stylish DJ's, and participates in a wide series of multimedia projects. And most of all, he performs the kind of music that attracts younger people.
During the concert that took place yesterday evening in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Cortney Pine demonstrated the main contours of the jazz oriented "music of the future." It has a dance (practically discotheque) base, one and a half chords, and lasts about 10-15 minutes, with repeating themes. It's a great band, with a lot of catches intended for young fans not necessarily that familiar with jazz. And very simple, if not primitive, music. Not quite Kenny G., but almost. Our main jazz critic, Alexei Batashov, danced in the aisles.
